George Martin
Is George Martin the Fifth Beatle? A rare concert program from 1998 in Australia where Sir George Martin conducted an orchestra featuring some of his favorite Beatles songs that he had produced in the decade of the 60s. George’s contributions to the Beatles recorded legacy are both legendary and immense. If anyone deserves the moniker of “The Fifth Beatle”, my vote goes to Mr. Martin!
The Beatles Recording Sessions
When I acquired this signed Mark Lewisohn Beatles Recording Sessions book I came up with two treasures, the excellent book by Mark and the signature of Beatles producer, George Martin, who helped to create and produce all those golden nuggets contained within the book.

I also think you could count Billy Preston as a Fifth Beatle, just based on his wonderful work on the Get Back/Let It Be Project (and Film), and Abbey Road. And people keep forgetting that he knew them from the residency with Little Richard and The Beatles in Hamburg in 1962; as well as meeting them again and attending the first Hollywood Bowl Concert in 1964. So, (technically at least), you’ve got two Fifth Beatles, George Martin and Billy Preston. And I might add, some folk would also include Neil Aspinall and Mal Evens as well! Sure love Mark Lewisohn’s book of the Recording Sessions, as well as his other book, The Beatles Chronicle.
I have a copy of that book too! (not signed by GM or Mark though) ☹️ I’ve always believed that George Martin was the 5th Beatle – he contributed so much to their recordings!
He certainly did NJ! His son, Giles, is doing a credible job in the remixes for the box sets as well. I believe he keeps his dad’s memory alive with his attempts at remixing. He keeps the thoughts in the back of his mind, “what would dad have done with this in a similar situation?”
The Beatles Recording Sessions, an excellent book!
For the longest time, that was my favorite Beatles book, Antonio! There have been so many outstanding books released since that book, it no longer holds the #1 position, but it is still right up there in status!
